The There Be Pirates! Story

There Be Pirates! is California’s premiere pirate jam band.  Not a Ren Faire novelty act, There Be Pirates! molds traditional sea music and pirate ditties into fresh new songs, accessible and often danceable.  The band adds their own swashbuckling originals in a variety of musickal styles ranging from smoky New Orleans blues to reggae, country, rock, and even a touch of cabaret.  Now and then, There Be Pirates! even pulls out an almost-straight traditional number to show they haven’t lost touch with their roots.

There Be Pirates! has wowed crowds and launched pirate conga lines at venues ranging from Pyrate Daze on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, to the pier over Scarborough Bay during Sea Fest in the summers of both 2009 & 2010, from the Merseyside Maritime Museum to their stage on the foredeck of the Earl of Pembroke, moored at Albert Dock for Liverpool’s huge On the Waterfront festival.

Their debut album, Drink & the Devil, has been well reviewed, and has sold internationally, with albums and downloads being sold all across the U.S. to the UK, the Netherlands, France - even to the Al Akbar Province of Iraq.  The band’s album, Pirates in the Desert, has been released, with new takes on traditional sea music, There Be Pirates!’ originals, and an epic rendition of The Ballad of Captain Kidd.   A CD Release Party for Pirates in the Desert was held at Danby Castle during the band’s second UK tour in 2010.

The band’s 2009 & 2010 UK tours were incredibly successful.  The year 2009 saw There Be Pirates! headlining at Scarborough’s 10th Anniversary Sea Fest, as well as performing for a weekend at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool, the Captain Cook in Staithes, and the Queen Catherine in Osmotherley.  The 2010 UK tour included the UK CD Release Party for Pirates in the Desert at Danby Castle, Liverpool’s On the Waterfront festival (live on Albert Dock with 50,000 weekend attendance), a return engagement on the pier at Sea Fest, and a delightful day at the Ryedale Folk Museum.  Programs included family-oriented piratical fun, and rocking pirate parties suitable more for adult audiences.

In 2011, There Be Pirates! played venues across California, from pirate pool parties at a desert resort hotel, to a benefit in the mountains, a British pub in San Pedro, and the Shoreline Village Pirate Festival in Long Beach.  The band also headlined at Southern California’s largest International Talk Like a Pirate Day Party.

This year, the band is in the studio recording their third album, and has been booked to perform July 7 at the Town of Yucca Valley’s Summer Concert Series, and then it’s back to England to headline Scarborough’s SeaFest once again, with a giant pyrate party/Mardi Gras festival on the pier, Saturday, July 21 (News: The venue has been moved to be part of the Whitby Sea Festival - same date, more information to follow).  More Uk dates to be added soon.  The band is expecting to release their album in time fer the summer performances.

There Be Pirates! is available for domestic US bookings throughout 2012.

Watch for more 2012 UK tour information coming soon!
